While running on a Georgia track on June 29, Bret, 43, collapsed. . Teammates Mark Weeks, an EMT and Bill Keever administered CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Later, doctors discovered Bret suffered a bifisicular block in which the electrical impulses to the heart malfunctioned. “I was running on our track during PT (physical training) and the last thing I remember was running toward the grass trying to get out of everyone’s way,” Bret said. “Mark came over and later told me he couldn’t find a pulse and I was a nice shade of blue. They loaded me into an ambulance and took me to a hospital.” Luckily, his heart muscle sustained no damage. Doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. installed a pacemaker on July 7. On July 9, he was given the green light to resume training for the Olympics.
On making his third Olympic team: “Hopefully the third time will be a charm. I’m not like I’m a rookie at this. I may not be a top favorite, but they know who I am out there and I feel I have as good a chance as anybody. I am shooting for two medals; I’d love a gold, but at 43, any medal would be great.”
