- At age 10, won his first match in a 30-shot prone event
- Enjoys deer hunting and archery and says he has never missed a deer with a gun but has with a bow
- Is an avid fisherman and has an 18-foot Bumblebee bass boat
- Is married and has two young boys
- Is an 18-year member of the national team

Mike is a member of the Army Marksmanship Unit in Fort Benning, Ga. and has been active in shooting most of his life. He moved several times during his childhood because of his father’s military career, living in Hawaii, Virginia and North Carolina. He is a 1982 graduate of Lejeune High School (N.C.) and a 1987 graduate of West Virginia. He was commissioned in the Army in January 1988.
“At this pint in my career, shooting is 70 to 75 percent mental. It’s like golf. Once you get the muscle memory down after years of training, you just need to maintain it. After that, the mental part kicks in, knowing when to abort a shot, shooting between pulse beats, learning to relax. Unlike most sports, we don’t try to get psyched up or hyper.”
“I was a dark horse qualifier in the prone, so I beat some pretty good shooters, some of the best in the world. I think my chances are very good. This is my third Olympic Games and hopefully, the third time will be a charm. I feel confident in my abilities.”
