Villanova University (Pa.) head coach Jay Wright is leading the USA's 2007 Pan American Games Team, while University of Alabama head mentor Mark Gottfried and Yale University head coach James Jones will serve as assistant coaches.

Seventeen of the 32 players boast of prior USA Basketball experience, including Brockman (2005 Nike Hoop Summit and 2004 Youth Development Festival West Team); Butch (2002 Youth Development Festival North Team); Chalmers (2004 Youth Development Festival West Team); Costner ( 2004 Youth Development Festival East Team); Devendorf (2004 Youth Development Festival North Team); Ellington (2006 Nike Hoop Summit, 2005 Youth Development Festival Blue Team); Gist ( 2003 Youth Development Festival East Team); Hendrix (2005 Nike Hoop Summit, 2004 and 2003 Youth Development Festival South teams); James (2004 USA Basketball Men's Youth Development Festival North Team); Leunen (2003 Youth Development Festival West Team); Mitchell (2004 Youth Development Festival South Team); Neitzel (2003 Youth Development Festival North Team); Nelson (2003 Youth Development Festival West Team); Reynolds (2005 Youth Development Festival White Team); Scheyer (2006 Nike Hoop Summit, 2005 Youth Development Festival Red Team); Taylor (2003 Youth Development Festival West Team); and White (2004 Nike Hoop Summit and 2003 Youth Development Festival South Team).

Of the 32 players partaking in the trials, Lofton earned Associated Press All-America second team and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America third team recognition. Collegeinsider.com named Maynor to its Mid-Major All-America Team, selected Chalmers, Falker, Hibbert and McNeal for its Defensive All-America Team, and named Costner and Reynolds to its Freshmen All-America Team.
Thirteen of the players slated to participate in the trials earned all-conference first team honors, two others were second team selections, two were named third team all-conference, and nine garnered honorable mention honors.

Among the trials participants' many accolades, Reynolds collected Big East Rookie of the Year honors, while Chalmers (Co-Big 12 Conference), Dorsey (Conference USA), Falker (Missouri Valley Conference) and McNeal (Big East Conference) earned Defensive Player of the Year recognition from their respective conferences. Additionally, Collins (Big 12), Costner (Atlantic Coast), Reynolds (Big East) and Scheyer (Atlantic Coast) were named to their conference All-Freshman teams.

Named to their respective 2006-07 all-conference teams were: Brockman (All-Pacific-10 first team); Dorsey (All-Conference USA first team); Falker (All-Missouri Valley first team); Hibbert (All-Big East first team); James (All-Big East first team); Lofton (All-Southeastern first team); Low (All-Pacific-10 first team); Maynor (All-Colonial Athletic Association first team); McNeal (All-Big East first team); Neitzel (All-Big Ten first team); Nivins (All-Atlantic 10 first team); Singletary (All-ACC first team), Weaver (All-Pacific-10 first team); Hendrix (All-Southeastern second team); White (All-Big Ten second team); Chalmers (All-Big 12 third team); Costner (All-Atlantic Coast third team); Butch (All-Big Ten honorable mention); Carter (All-Big 12 honorable mention); Collins (All-Big 12 honorable mention); Devendorf (All-Big East honorable mention); Foster (All-Southeastern honorable mention); Gist (All-Atlantic Coast honorable mention); Leunen (All-Pacific-10 honorable mention); Nelson (All-Atlantic Coast honorable mention); and Reynolds (All-Big East honorable mention).

The 32 players include 15 who will be seniors in 2007-08, 12 who will be juniors, and five who will be sophomores in 2007-08.
Ten separate conferences have players involved in the trials, with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Big East Conference heading the list with six players each; the Pacific-10 Conference and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) each have five players; the Big 12 and the Big Ten Conference have three players; and the Atlantic 10 Conference, Conference USA, Colonial Athletic Association, and Missouri Valley Conference all have one player participating in the trials.

Twenty-five universities feature players in the trials, with Marquette featuring three, while Alabama, Duke, Kansas, Oregon and Washington State boast of a pair of players each.

Trials for the USA Pan American Games Team will be held July 12-14 at Haverford College (Pa.) with the 32 U.S. hopefuls participating. The first trials session will be held on Thursday, July 12, 5-7 p.m. (all times local, EDT). Two trials sessions (10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.) will be held on July 13 and 14. The selected USA team finalists will remain for the USA's July 15-21 training camp.

The official 12-member USA Pan American Games squad will compete July 25-29 in the 2007 Pan American Games men's basketball competition. The United States has been placed in preliminary round Group A along with Argentina, Panama and Uruguay, and Group B consists of Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. opens preliminary play July 25 facing Uruguay (10 p.m. Rio de Janeiro local time), then meets Panama on July 26 (7:45 p.m. Rio de Janeiro local time) and the U.S. closes out preliminary round action against Argentina on July 27
(7:45 p.m. Rio de Janeiro local time). Semifinals will be held on July 28 and the finals will be played July 29.

USA Men In The Pan American Games
The Pan American Games, held every four years in the year prior to the Olympics and organized by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), is a multi-sport competition open to men and women representing countries from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.

The 2007 Pan American Games will be held July 13-29 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the men's basketball competition slated for July 25-29.
Featuring a roster of collegians who competed primarily against older and more internationally experienced senior national teams, the USA men suffered three narrow defeats in five games to place fourth at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Americans have earned a medal in 12 of their 14 Pan Am Games appearances, including a record eight golds, as well as three silvers and one bronze. The U.S. men currently own an 81-11 (.880 winning percentage) all-time mark at the Pan Am Games.

Held since 1951, the USA dominated the first five Pan Am Games, earning five consecutive golds. At the 1971 Pan Ams, despite a record of 2-1 in the preliminary round, the USA did not advance to the medal round and for the first time in Pan American history did not win the gold medal. However, the United States rebounded for a 26-0 record over the next three Pan Am Games and captured its last Pan Am gold in 1983. The gold has eluded the U.S. in the past five Games, with the Americans earning three silvers (1987, 1995 and 1999), and a bronze medal (1991).

Many USA Basketball athletes who have been selected to a Pan American Games team have gone on to compete in the Olympic Games, while numerous others enjoyed stellar professional careers. In all, 34 Pan Am athletes have been a member of a U.S. Olympic squad, including Ernie Grunfeld; Grant Hill; Luscious Jackson; Michael Jordan; Christian Laettner; Danny Manning; Chris Mullin; Emeka Okafor; Sam Perkins; Oscar Robertson; David Robinson; Isiah Thomas; Jerry West; and Jo Jo White.

While the list of former Pan American Games players is impressive, the list of USA head coaches is equally striking. Norman Pilgrim (1955); and Hal Fischer and John Longfellow (1951).
