USOC Statement on Mitchell Commission Report
By Maureen Weekes // U.S. Olympic Committee // December 14, 2007
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mitchell Commission Report provides a comprehensive view of the extent to which the use of steroids, human growth hormone and other prohibited substances is tearing at the fabric of professional baseball.
It took leadership to commission this report, and we commend Commissioner Selig, President DuPuy, and other Major League Baseball officials for having done so. We stand ready to assist Major League Baseball in attacking this problem by sharing with them all that we have learned in implementing our own anti-doping program – which is independent, transparent and aggressive.
As disappointing as these findings are, this report could signal a turning point for professional baseball. This report could represent the beginning of a new era – an era during which the credibility and values of the sport are fully restored.
While the attention today, understandably, is on the findings of the Mitchell Commission, it would be incorrect to view this as a problem that is unique to professional baseball. The use of illegal, performance-enhancing substances is a national problem that impacts every segment and level of sport in our society. Nothing less than a national response will ultimately solve this problem. We must reaffirm for the youth of our nation that the use of illegal substances is not a prerequisite for participation in sport.
